Nixon’s Predicament Versus Trump’s

A growing number of Trump critics say there is no longer any good reason not to impeach the president of the United States. Columnist Mehdi Hasan of The Intercept podcast points to several arguments against impreachment that he says don’t hold water. Among them, the argument that impeachment would generate sympathy for Trump, and why even bother, since there are not enough votes in the Senate to convict. He cites how the public was largely sympathetic to Nixon when Democrats of that time first raised prospects for impeachment. He say the public turned against the president as more was revealed about Nixon’s abuses of power. Certain that he would be impeached and removed from office, Nixon resigned in August of 1974.
